  • In this step Miss.  Hilly was introduced because of that Minny did to her. Miss Hilly was introduced sympathetically after the pie incident. Pg. 39 "that makes zero sense to me. after what i did to Miss. Hilly, right in front of Miss. Walters to see?"  
  • Meeting With the Mentor/Helper
  • In this step this is when Aibileen notices the bitter seed is growing and this makes things stressful and difficult for her to accept the way things are after the bitter seed was first introduced. "a bitter seed was planted inside me. and i just didn't feel so accepting anymore" Pg. 3
  • Crossing the Threshold
  • In this step Aibileen is invited to an interview and she declines, being African american Aibileen has a lot to lose. if she is caught doing such a dangerous job she can be thrown in jail or even killed. "'please, will you at least think about it?' I sigh, stare out at the yard. gentle as i can, i say 'no ma'am'" page 120
  • Tests and Enemies
  • In this step AiIbileen decides to help Skeeter with the book she is writing, which makes Skeeter her mentor, Page 142 "law have mercy. i reckon i'm on do it". Aibileen is influenced by the death of her son from the past years before and Mrs. Hilly's bathroom sanitation project influences her to accept Skeeters offer.
  • Do you wanna help me with my book Aibileen?
  • In this step this is when Miss. Skeeter breaks all the rules and asks for a bunch of toilets to be dumped on Hilly's lawn, as Hilly is trying to get a bill passed which requires each Mississippi family to build an outdoor bathroom.
  • In this step this is when Minny is giving Miss Hilly the chocolate pie because Minny is upset with what Miss Hilly did.
