  • THE INTERNET
  • Hi, I am TCP, also known as Transmisson Control Protocol. I am responsible for breaking up and reassembling files into packets and packets back into files. When ever a file is sent from one computer to another, it gets separated into several packets, depending on the size of the file, in this case the file is an email. Without me, the information in this file will be out of sequence and confusing to the receiver. I place a number to each packet. This is called Packet numbering. This is done so that packets can be laid out in order and I can detect when a packet is missing. After doing this, I will then send these packets to my colleague Internet Protocol (IP). Here is an example of how the packets look before they are sent to IP.
  • PACKET 3: So I want that too. Dont worry, when you come Trinidad Iwill help you out too. Your Cousin Kevin
  • PACKET 2: Tell auntie to send me the new Iphone. I failed three coursesthis semester but don't tell her that, tell her I pass all. Tell Uncle Joe wemiss him too and new Yeezys come out last week.
  • PACKET 1: Hey Adam, How Are you. We miss you and auntie Janice back inTrinidad.
  • Hi there, I am IP, also known as internet protocol, My job is quite simple. It is my responsibility to ensure that packets get to their destination.  In this example, I have to ensure that these packets are sent to triniadam@gmail.com.  Once all packets are accounted for and I have established an address for this file, it will be sent to the receiver, as shown in the next image.
  • gMail.com Email Received from Kevin
  • Adam
  • Apart from ensuring packets get to their destination I have another simple job. That is to identify nodes.  An example of a node can be a printer or another computer or even a modem. Each node has a different IP address. An IP address is a unique string of numbers separated by full stops that identifies each computer or device. for example 64.28.139.231
  • However it can be quite difficult to remember all these numbers if you where to put these in your browser. that is where I come in. My name is DNS, also known as, Domain Name System. My job is to convert numeric IP addresses into alphabetic names. So instead of remember all those numbers, you can simply place www.uwi.tt into your browser. This will take you to same site as the string of numbers would.
