Storyboard Text

  • I will follow my father's footsteps and start a tailoring business on my own... I already know a lot about the cloth industry
  • Richard Arkwright came from a family full of tailors, but he was apprenticed to a barber and was very ambitious...
  • Soon, Arkwright employed John Kay and some other craftsmen to develop a machine called as "the spinning frame"
  • We need to find a quicker way to supply our weavers with thread! Do you have any ideas John Kay?
  •  Let's develop a machine which can produce cotton thread quicker. I know, we can call it the   spinning frame!
  • Arkwright partnered with 4 businessmen and created a patent for his machine
  • I want to partner  with  you and create a patent for my machine, which is now  going to be powered by a water wheel.
  •  Arkwright built cottages near the factory and advertised for workers to come and work in the factory. He preferred weavers with families as children could do much of the work.
  • Hiring workers  to come to Cromford   and  work. Children welcomed  to work in the factory!
  •  The water frame was successful and Arkwright planned for more factories. His partner thought it was risky but he carried on alone and built successful factories in England and Scotland
  • Fine, you can go! I will carry on alone.
  • I  am planning to  build more factories.
  •  I don't think you should do that,   it will be very risky and will cost you a lot!
  •  Arkwright became very rich and bought a country estate. He built a large mansion and then a castle to live in. He died in 1792.
