Storyboard Text

  • Are you okay?
  • I don't think so, I feel really dizzy and swelling of the hands and feet.
  • It seems to be you have sickle cell anemia. Or in other words, Hemoglobin S.
  • What's a sickle cell anemia?
  • Sickle Cell Anemia is a blood disorder that's inherited from both parents to the child. Which means you were born with it, and it's not contagious either.
  • There's a cure right?
  • Yes, a bone marrow transplant. But it might not work for you, because you'll need a healthy sibling with matching tissues and a suitable donor.
  • Okay, but I don't have a sibling.
  • Well there's treatments you can do. Like blood transplant and medication
  • How could have this been prevented?
  • This couldn't of been prevented but you should talk to your genetic counselor if you do plan to have any kids and carry the sickle cell trait.
