  • The Lottery
  • A town with a population of about 300 people has an annual lottery in June. They believe that if they sacrifice one person that they will get good crops for the year.
  • The Lottery
  • Everyone gathers for the lottery, some of the younger kids already have stones in their hands and pockets. The village poeple wait for Mr. Summers to begin the lottery process.
  • Each person is called up by Mr. Summers to pull a piece of folded paper out of a box. No one is allowed to unfold their paper untill everyone has pulled from the box and Mr. Summers has ordered them to.

  • At Mr. Summers' cue, everyone unfolds and lifts their paper so Mr. Summers and everyone around them can see. Of all the blank papers in the air, only one man stands with a black charcoal dot in the center of his paper.
  • The man's wife Tess panics and protests saying that Mr.Summers didn't give her husband enough time to pick his paper. Everyone ignores her screams and Tess's family has to take the chance again. This second time Tess is the one with the dot.

  • Tess screams over and over that it isn't fair. Mr. Summers tells everyone to "get it over with quickly". Each villager picks up a stone and one by one they throw them at Tess.
