Satchel realizes he will never get out of the negro leagues. He decides it is not worth it fighting to stay healthy and make it to the majors, so he decides to get a job.
Satchel was able to get a job as a chef in Kansas City. It wasn't high pay, but he was able to serve people food that was really healthy and that he loved to eat. He really loved the job, but he felt like something was missing.
Satchel's window closed to keep playing baseball after giving up on being a baseball player, but he was able to stay attached to the game by umping high school baseball. He found the missing piece to the puzzle.
