  • Prohibition
  • My husbands an alcoholic and its tearing our family apart.
  • The banning of intoxicating liquors
  • After one year from the ratification of this article the manufacture, sale, or transportation of intoxicating liquors within, the importation thereof into, or the exportation thereof from the United States and all territory subject to the jurisdiction thereof for beverage purposes is hereby prohibited.
  • CLOSED
  • Many groups believed that prohibition would help the economy reduce crime and strengthen family
  • 18th amendment is passed July 16th 1920
  • Bars closed and the economy suffered from the lack of sales from alcohol. Restaurants closed and many jobs were lost
  • Americans did not stop drinking however and many went to underground distilleries with unregulated alcohol
  • The government also lost huge amounts of tax revenue on the lack of selling of alcohol as well as spending nearly 300 million on enforcing the ban.
  • The ability to sell illegal alcohol gave rise to huge groups of organized crime some of the most famous being Al Capone.
