Exposition: Madame Loisel is a woman who wants to be rich. She is disappointed in her maid and lack of material wealth. Her husband, Monsieur Loisel, however, is content with his life in his middle class home.
Complication: Monsieur Loisel comes home with an invitation to a fancy party at the ministry. Madame Loisel is upset because she does not have a dress to wear to the party. Monsieur Loisel gives her 400 francs that he was saving for a fishing trip with his friendsto buy a fancy dress.
Rising Action: Madame Loisel wants some jewelry to wear with her beautiful dress at the party. She visits her rich friend to borrow some, and she borrows a diamond necklace from her. She goes to the party and has a great time.
Climax: Oh no! Madame Loisel notices that the diamond necklace is missing! She must have lost it in the cab on her way home. Monsieur Loisel goes out to search for it all day long, but to no avail.
Falling Action: Madame Loisel spends 10 years working hard to buy a new necklace to replace the old one. In this time she's learnt that you should not take what you have for granted and you should be grateful for what you have.
Resolution: Madame Loisel runs into her rich friend on the street, and she finally tells her that she had lost the original necklace. Her friend says in reply that the original was a fake.
