Diabetes is ranked as the 6th leading death cause in DC
•85% of deaths caused by diabetes occurred in people with 55 or more years of age •Many diabetics die not because of diabetes, but the treatment and complications of diabetes
Out of all the wards in DC, Ward 7 ( 43.6 per 100,000), Ward 8( 41 per 100,000) and Ward 5(40.4 per 100,000) has the highest percentages of deaths caused by diabetes. Unlike Ward 2 (6.3 per100,000) which has the lowest percentage of deaths caused by diabetes.
Diabetes Rate by Race: •Black: 88.3 •White:9.7 •Asian/ Other: 2.1 African Americans hold the highest percentage of deaths by diabetes which is seven times more than the percentage of death by diabetes in white people.
There is a study to prevent diabetes found out that people who are in a pre-diabetic conditions can prevent type 2 diabetes by changing their diet and the amount of physical activity they experience daily. This life style change can prevent type 2 diabetes because the blood glucose level will be in the normal range.
Proposed Health Policy: •Wards that have a high mortality rate because of diabetes should have shops that have healthy, organic options. •All neighborhoods should have lessons on serious health conditions like diabetes and a way they can avoid those conditions.
