As the two lovers escape, their boat sinks. Sam is shot to his death while Kate Barlow is unfortunately rescued. "The Walker boat smashed in Sam's boat. Sam was shot and killed in the water. Katherine Barlow was rescued against her wishes." page 115. This tells us how bad of a person Trout Walker is and how racist people were at the time.
Later, Kate Barlow killed the sheriff. After this she became the most feared outlaw in all the West with the name, 'Kissin' Kate Barlow'. "For the next twenty years Kissin' Kate Barlow was one of the most feared outlaws in all the West." I believe that Kate Barlow became an outlaw as it was a way to express her feelings and get revenge after what they did to Sam. I still believe she was a good person however she just didn't care anymore.
Kate Barlow returns to Green Lake and is woken up in her shed by Trout Walker. She has to tell Walker where the loot of her robberies is otherwise she will be shot to death. "She was awakened one morning by someone kicking open the cabin door. She opened her eyes to see the blurry end of a rifle, two inches from her nose." page 121. This tells us that Charles Walker had been desperate for money and maybe he got bankrupt. This could be a reason why he did that to Kate Barlow.
