Fredrick Douglas was born sometime around 1818 in Maryland. His mother was Harriet Bailey, who was later sent to another plantation.He was raised by his grandmother.
At age 6 he went to work for the Auld family to take care of their son.
Sophia Auld taught Frederick how to read but stopped because her husband forbade her to keep teaching him.
Douglass defied the authority of his master so he was sent to a “slave breaker” to learn how to work in the field, He fights the slave breaker.
He worked in the shipbuilding industry where he was able to save money for his escape.
In 1838,Fredrick escaped to New York.He marry's Anna Murray who was also from baltimore.
