A part of speech that compares two things using like or as is a simile. In the story "The Raven" the author uses the simile "...there came a tapping, as of someone gently rapping, rapping on my chamber door." to compare the tapping to rapping.
A metaphor is a figure of speech in which a word or phrase is applied to an object or action to which it is not literally applicable. In the story "The Raven" the author uses the metaphor, "And each separate dying ember wrought its ghost upon the floor."
Personification is when you give a non human, human-like characteristics. The Raven is giving human-like characteristics when he talks. "Quoth the Raven, "'Nevermore.'"
