Storyboard Text

  • "Lumf" > bowel movements
  • . Hans also indicated that 'lumf' also represented his little sister . Freud concluded that for Hans, laden vehicles symbolised pregnancy
  • . Hans became preoccupied with bowel movements he called 'lumf' . His father interpreted lumf as a symbol as being similar to a loaded cart (a body full of faeces being like a fully laden cart)
  • The resolution
  • This led Freud to conclude that Hans had overcome his oedipus complex and could now identify with his father
  • his father asked 'are your children still alive?' Hans replied that boys couldn't have children, he had been their mum but now dad.
  • Hans had a fantasy about how we will look after his own children. One day he was playing with imaginary children
  • Findings - Plumber dream
  • Freud interpreted this as Hans being given a bigger backside and widdler-like daddies so symbolises Hans resolving the O.C by identifying with same-sex parent.
  • By 6 his phobia went away and had a final dream, a plumber came with a pair of pincers and took away his behind, then gave him a new pair and then the same with his widdler
  • Psychodynamic - Hens' phobia could be explained in terms of the anxiety of his parents separating, most of his anxiety arose when the mother threatened to leave the family. His parents eventually split up.
  • Alternative explanations
  • Behaviourism - he was classically conditioned to fear horses, Hans witnessed a horse fall and collapse in the street, Hans then associated this distress and fear to the sight of all horses
  • Evaluation - strengths
  • Finding out causes - useful in revealing and treating origins of abnormal behaviour
  • Qualitative date - in depth picture producing lots of qual. data. Freud argued it was the special relationship between Hans and father that allowed analysis to be detailed
  • Evaluation - weaknesses
  • Androcentric - The oedipus complex is unique to boys, Frued said that girls develop penis envy which makes girls want to bear children as they realise they cannot develop a penis of her own. many psychologists say this is sexist
  • Cannot generalise - study only relates to one individual male who isn't typical
  • Not objective/scientific - Only Freud's interpretation, Freud only saw Hans once/twice so leads to reduction in objectivity and also the father was a supporter of Freud
