On the train to New York, Holden strikes up a conversation with one of his fellow students. Holden hates her son but tells her how much of a great kid her son is anyway.
Upon arriving to New York Holden decides to get a hotel room. After he checks in he decides to go down to the hotel's night club area where he flirts with three women from out of town.
Holden leaves then leaves the hotel to go to a jazz club downtown. In the cab Holden asks the cab driver where he thinks the ducks from Central Park go when the lagoon freezes over. The cab driver gets agitated so Holden drops the subject.
Holden hires a prostitute for five dollars but the girl and Holden never have sex because all of a sudden he doesn't feel well. The girl pimp come back to Holden's room for another five dollars but Holden won't give it to them so the pimp beats Holden up.
The following morning Holden decides to call his friend Sally Hayes and see if she wants to go on a date and see a show with Holden.
Before meeting Sally for his date Holden decides to go to Central Park to try and find Phoebe so he can talk to her. He ends up finding one of her friends and talks to her for awhile but Phoebe is not at the park so Holden leaves to go wait for Sally.
