  • Listen, men! This is going to be a long journey but we must be victorious.
  • Vasco de Gama, a Portuguese nobleman, was commissioned by the Portuguese king to find a sea route to the east in order to expand the Portuguese Imperium.
  • will we ever make it?
  • Do not lose hope... we will get there. We just need to stop a few times...
  • I feel sick...
  • Vasco de Gama sets sail determined to be a hero for his people with three vessels and a supply ship.
  • Please- we came all this way. Lets make a treaty. Lets trade. Anything please... it has been three months!
  • Fine. No treaty but will trade. Then you can leave.
  • They knew this was going to take a long time and they were all putting their lives at risk.
  • OUR HERO! WELCOME HOME! WE LOVE YOU!
  • Some of us finally made it home. We bring spices and goods from India. What a long journey thank you!
  • Along the extensive journey, the fleets land on many other stops along the coast of Africa and try to efficiently cross over the sea despite obstructions. The Cape of Good Hope, for instance, with the most difficulty due to challenges in weather and illness. In all, they spend very long periods of time on the water and face adversity in many different ways.
  • this storm is crazy
  • should we go back?
  • After arrival- negotiations took place in order to reach a common ground on trading. The local population in India were very hesitant and hostile toward the quality of the goods that Vasco de Gama had to offer. Finally after 3 months of back and forth, August 1498 was the day that the ships were loaded with coveted goods and spices and they headed back to Portugal.
  • By the time Vasco de Gama returned from this first voyage to India, he had been gone for more than 2 years- less than half of his crew made it out while the rest perished due to illnesses! Vasco de Gama’s long journey promised hope and inspiration for explorations of the future and serves an important role in the rich history of Portuguese exploration and trade. He is greeted like a hero upon return!
