  • Today we are going to learn about education reform. Horace Mann will be coming in to tell us about it. Horace Mann was a poor farm boy who wanted to go to school.
  • Education Reform
  • Many poor children got into trouble so reformers like me tried to create public schools for them to use. Teachers were also under educated and classrooms were over crowded.
  • New York Cit had public elementary schools in the 1820's
  • Education Reform
  • We convinced people to pay taxes for better schools, higher salaries for teachers as well as better training for them.
  • By 1850 most of Mann's ideas were used in the North and the West
  • How did you fix the education system?

  • Women and African-Americans weren't always allowed to go to school.
  • 1853- Horace M. became the first president of Antioch college for men and women.
  • Education Reform
  • Prudence Crandall admitted the first black student to her girls school in Connecticut in 1833. She also opened a school for African-American girls.
  • 1837- The first college to admit women opened
