• Hey Jessica, I wonder if we can apply what we learned about integers today on the field trip.﻿
• I hope so Sam, I think we could get extra points if we show Mrs. McFarlane.﻿
• Welcome to Tallulah Gorge State Park. ﻿ Take a look around and tell me what you see. Make sure you write it in your journals.
• 5 feet﻿
• Hey Sam, look there is a turtle in the water!﻿
• I see it! It looks like it is about 5 feet below sea level or -5.﻿
• Look! There is a bird in the tree.
• 20 feet
• I see it! It looks like it is about 20 feet high. ﻿
• Wow! Dioyou see that? That bird swooped down and got the turtle.﻿
• I see it! I wonder how far that bird had to travel to get the turtle?﻿
• If the turtle was at negative 5 feet and the bird started at positive 20 feet, we need to find the difference.
• ﻿So the bird went down a distance of 15 ft.
• Journal   -5 - 20 = ? We are going to use our subtraction rule of keep, change, change.  -5 + 20 = ? Now we have to subtract the numbers because the signs are different. 20 - 5 = 15 Keep the sign of the higher number so our answer is -15. -5 -20  = -15
• ﻿We know difference means to subtract so lets write our equation.
• ﻿Great! Lets go tell Mrs. McFarlane.
