The Highwayman rides on his horse down to the old door inn to see the landlords beautiful daughter. The daughters name was Bess, he was deeply in love with her long black hair and her gorgeous eyes.
The Highway man ask Bess for one kiss, and he tells her that he will be back by morning light. He then rides away on his horse, off into the moonlight.
The Highway man did not come back at dawn, did not come back by sunset, nor by the rise of the moon. Instead a troop of King Georges men, a troop of Redcoats came marching up to the old inn door.
The troops came marching in, not bothering to talk to the landlord, instead they drink all his ale and gagged his daughter.
The troop then took Bess up to her room and tied her up to the end of the bed. They the shoved a musket under her breast and kissed her over and over, they were very rude to her.
Bess knew that the redcoats were going to catch and kill the Highwayman and she wanted to do everything she could to prevent that. Bess started to hear the trotting of the horse coming down the path in the moonlight, she had to warn him.
