Gentlemen of Jamestown
You do the work, not me!
Me? What about you?
First Council of Jamestown
When the Susan Constant, Discovery, and Godspeed reached Virginia, all of the boats contained men only. No women. Most of the men were gentlemen. These men were lazy vain and had no training or taste for hard work.
When the settlers arrived in Cape Henry, Captain Newport opened a box that had been entrusted to him by the London Company. The box contained the seven names that would become the first council of Jamestown. Their first task was to elect a president.
