  • In 499 BC, Ionians and Athenians revolted against the Persians. Darius I and the Persians defended the Ionian Revolt, and punished Athens for participating in this.
  • Ionian Revolt
  • Never!!
  • We will revolt!
  • In 492 BC, the Persians waited many days for the Athenians to attack, but didn't attack since they were outnumbered 2:1.      The Persians decided to pack up and attack Athens.
  • Battle of Marathon
  • We should attack Athens!
  • We've been waiting here forever
  • The Athenians surprise attacked the Persians by striking an offensive attack. The Persians lost about 6,400 men, while the Athenians only lost about 200.
  • Meanwhile, in Athens...
  • Attack!!!!
  • In 480 BC, King Leonidas of Sparta successfully stood against the Persians until a Greek traitor showed the Persians a trail that would attack the Greeks from the rear
  • Battle of Thermopylae
  • Psst.. I have a trail that will help you defeat the Greeks.

  • King Leonidas sent all but 300 Spartan soldiers away. The Spartans fought to the death, which stalled and helped Themistocles get time to gather his ships.
  • Sir, yes sir!
  • You all must keep fighting, no matter what
  • Battle of Salamis
  • In 480 BC, Themistocles drew the Persian fleet into the Strait of Salamis because he believed that the ships would crowd together, making it easier for the Greeks.
  • Well this is a benefit for the Greeks...
  • The ships are too crowded!!!
