  • The French Revolution is an uprising in France against the monarchy from 1789 to 1799 which resulted in the establishment of France as a republic. 
  • 3 States meeting 
  • I'm from the Third Estate and I want equal rights!
  • There were three social classes.  The first and second Estates were the rich and high positioned people.97% of the people belonged to the Third Estate.  That group of people was then broken up into 2 groups.  The bourgeoisie was well educated and believed in Enlightenment ideas.  The other group of the Third Estate was the peasants.  The peasants played half of their income as taxes and often struggled every day with starvation representation.

  • By 1780s Frances economy was in decline.Heavy taxes made the profit almost impossible. The King and Queen had not run the government smoothly. The king paid no attention to government officials and only spent money on the Versailles.  The queen tried to control the government and spent too much money on her self.  The King's solution was higher taxes.
  • End of terror 
  • The first time the 3 Estates had met in 175 years.  Each Estate had 1 vote. The 2 privileged estates could overrule the Third Estate.  The Third Estate's delegates named themselves the National Assembly.  They could pass laws and reforms in the name of the French people.  
  • Robespierre founds the Committee of Public Safety and ushers in the Reign of Terror- any and all enemies were guillotined. As many as 40,000 were executed.
  • Im so scared!
  • National Convention members turned on Robespierre.  This marks the end of Reign of Terror.  A new government is formed. It placed power firmly in the hands of the upper middle class and called for a two-house legislature and an executive body of five men, known as the Directory.  Third time changing the government since 1789.
