Storyboard Text

  • In the summer of 2016, my dad and I went on a boat trip at the Chanel Islands.
  • At first everything was fine. We went to the beach, went with some people to inner, and started to load our things onto the boat.
  • Some of the other people on the boat were calling me "he", too.
  • It really made me upset. I hadn't asked him specifically to call me "he", but that didn't change how it made me feel. Eventually, I pulled him aside.
  • But my dad "corrected" them, telling them I was a girl.
  • He took it surprisingly well, and said he would try to use my preferred pronouns, during the trip at least.
  • I went to get ready for bed after that, and cried happy tears in the bathroom of the ship.
  • That was the first time I felt that my gender was accepted by one of my parents.
  • It gave me hope that someday I could be accepted for who I truly was by my family.
