The story begins with a meeting of the death penalty verses the imprisonment. A young lawyer states if he would rather live a life in prison than get the death penalty. The banker interrupts the lawyer and bets him two million dollars that he would last five years in imprisonment.
The lawyer and the banker come to an agreement. The agreement discusses no relations with humans. That he could have anything you want, like book, music, wine, etc.
In the first year of his confinement the lawyer suffered from loneliness and depression. He never drank wine or chewed tobacco.
The lawyer in the second year of imprisonment explored music and began to wine. He didn't read books, but spent hours writing. The sixth year the prisoner began studying languages, philosophy, and history. Then, he threw himself in his studies. The lawyer wrote a letter to the banker about his studies using the languages he learned.
The bet is coming to the end, the banker is in some money trouble. He has a serious gambling problem and doesn't have the money to give to the lawyer.
The banker decides to go to the cell and brings a knife. He decides to kill the lawyer. When the banker goes the cell he sees the lawyer sleeping while sitting up. The banker goes to behind the banker to kill him when he sees a letter. The letter said that he is breaking the bet because he no longer thinks money is important.
