  • Everything around us is made of atoms. Atoms are the basic units of matter and the defining structure of elements.
  • Hi! today we will be talking about the atomic structure and the history of atoms.
  • An atomic structure are the particles that make up an atom.
  • The atomic mass (A) is determined adding the number of protons and neutrons or adding the atomic number and neutrons(A=Z+n)
  • The atomic number(Z) is determined by the number of protons (Z=p+)
  • Atoms have three subatomic particles: protons,neutrons and electrons. Proton has a positive charge (p+) electron has a negative charge(e-+) neutron has no charge(n)
  • Atoms with same protons and electrons is neutral charge. Atoms with more protons than electrons, is positive charge. Atoms with more electrons than protons, is negative charge.
  • Atoms with different amounts of protons and electrons are called isotopes.
  • Atoms can be classified into three which are isotopes,ions and neutral.
  • Atoms with different protons and electrons are called ions.Ions can be classified into two namely cations and anion.
  • Cations are atoms that have more electrons than protons. Anions are atoms with more protons than electrons.
  • J.J Thomson discovered the electrons.He also proposed the existence of a (+) particle.
  • democritus claimed that matter was made of "atomos" which means cannot be split.
  • James Chadwick discovered particles with with no charge and called it neutrons.
  • Ernest Rutherford discovered protons and the nucleus through his gold foil experiment.
