It was the first day of 6th grade for 12 year young Lauren. Lauren was just leaving home as she looked at her new outfit with her long, brown, curly hair, but once she smiled as she looked in the mirror something was just wrong. Her smile slowly sank into a straight face.
Once they got to school Lauren was excited to finally see Amanda after what seemed like forever. “Amanda!” Lauren yelled in excitement as she realized she was in a middle school hallway. “Lauren, how are you?” Amanda questioned as she gave Lauren a huge hug. “How are you?” Lauren said as she smiled quick enough to go to a straight face. “Good! I just can’t believe that today is our first day of middle school! I mean here we are!” Amanda stated excitedly as the bell cut her off. “We better get to our first hour!” Lauren said as she rushed into her 1st hour. She was surprised when she saw Amanda sit next to her.
“Amanda, you’r in this first hour?” Lauren questioned shyly. “Ya, why?” Amanda asked as she slid her stuff in her desk. “Class, my name is Mrs. Rogans, you can also call me Mrs.R. Okay? These seats will be your permanent seats until the end of the quarter. Now grab out your notebooks,” Mrs.Rogans excitedly said as Lauren slowly zoned out. After organizing their notebooks Mrs. Rogans leaned over by Amanda and said “Lauren, you need to pack up for you orthodontics appointment.” “Umm, I am Amanda. She is Lauren,” Amanda stated as she pointed at Lauren. “Oh, sorry Amanda, sorry Lauren,” Mrs. Rogans said as she shyly looked back. “Well, Lauren can you please start to pack up for you braces appointment?” “Ya,” Lauren replied worried that Amanda would over hear as she pack up. “See ya later, have fun getting braces,” Amanda said as she laughed.
Welcome to your first day of school! I am Mrs.Rogans
With her braces on Lauren’s embarrassment shadowed lauren like a ghost in her own footprints, like heavy weights on her shoulders, something she could not get rid of. Lauren felt different and she didn't like it at all. “Told you,” Amanda said sassy as she walked into the popular group in the hallway, as she passed Lauren. The group laughed as they passed all the others they would consider “Unpopular”. “Amanda,” Lauren said as she pulled off Amanda to the side, “why does everyone know? Why am I the laughing stock of the school?” “I don't know why do you have more money, better everything, a new outfit everyday, why?” Amanda questioned as her eyes slowly turned red. “What do you mean, and why does this have to do anything with it?” Lauren asked hesitantly. “ Because, you're popular and what am I? Your sidekick?” Amanda wondered as she started to cry.
“What is the real reason Amanda?” Lauren said as she started to feel frustration. “My parents, they are really tight on money really right now,” Amanda said as she slowly started to cry. “But, that is not it. My dad lost his job too, and he had the most income. Now my mom is only getting paid about seven dollars per hour. I am constantly wearing the same clothes every week, but with you, you only wear one outfit once. Haven't you noticed?” Amanda cried as she slowly quieted down.
"No I haven't, do you know why? Because I don't pay tension to what you wear but, to who you are,” Lauren stated as she started to cry. “I'm so sorry for what I've done to you, but you have everything that I will never have, ” Amanda stated as she slowly wiped her tears. “I will never let this happen again,” Lauren said as they slowly hugged Amanda.
