Katniss is the name of the main character in the story, She is named after the plant, which is also known as arrowhead.
Primrose (nickname Prim) is the name of Katniss' little sister.
'Arrowhead' may be a reference to Katniss' archery skills. Also, Katniss is a symbolism of hope, proved by the quote, 'As long as you can find yourself, you'll never starve', saying that the Katniss plant is edible, providing enough food to ensure survival. it also 'doesn't look like much, but is good as any potato', which means she may look weak, but if needed, could fight as well as any career tribute.
Buttercup is the name that Prim gave to the Everdeen's scruffy cat.
Primrose represents the idea of 'can't live without you', to say how crucial Prim is to Katniss. It also foreshadows future events, where Katniss volunteers as tribute, sacrificing herself in order to save Prim, who would not be able to survive in the games.
The dandelion is significant in this story, and makes multiple appearances, such as when Katniss looks way from Peeta at school, spotting the first dandelion of the season.
The name 'Buttercup' shows Prim's positivity, as she saw the cat in a more positive light, naming it after a bright yellow flower, instead of the 'muddy yellow' colour his fur actually was. The positivity of Prim brings out Katniss' negativity, as such a stark contrast is introduced.
After Peeta gives Katniss the bread which helps her survive, she catches his eye at school. When she looks away, she sees the first dandelion of that year, which she is able to eat. The dandelion is seen as sign of hope, establishing a link between Peeta and the idea of a return of hope.
