Garret Augustus Morgan was born in Paris Kentucky to Elizabeth Morgan and an undefined father- John Hunt Morgan or Sydney Morgan- and his 11 siblings.
Garret A. Morgan was pulled from school in the sixth grade by his mother. The only other education he had was from a private tutor that he hired in his teen years in Cincinnati while working as a handyman.
Garret, come home now! No more school for you!
Garret A. Morgan's first invention was the improved sewing machine. This was due to his interest in mechanics from working in sewing machine manufacturing.

Morgan opened a tailoring shop with his wife Mary and found wool was being scorched by the needle. He experimented with chemical solutions, but found they straightened hair instead. This led to the Morgan Hair Company which led to his welfare in 1909.

In 1914, Garret A Morgan patented a breathing device which would protect users from harmful gases and smoke. This was later used as a prototype for the gas masks used in the First World War. Today, it is used by fire fighters and rescue teams.
Garret A Morgan and his brother heard about the Cleveland Tunnel Explosion and went in with breathing devices to save people. Since they were black, they received no recognition until recent. People also found out Morgan was black, and refused to buy his inventions.
