  • Any household over the age of 21 is allowed to claim 160 acres if agrees to build a home and take of the land.
  • OKLAHOMA LAND RUSH

  • Pumps like that one were powered by windmills and dew water from deep underground!
  • In 1862, Congress passed the Homestead Act, it gave households land for 5 years, they had to fulfill the requirements to claim ownership of the land.
  • Between 1889-1895, five land runs drew thousands of people to Oklahoma, but not everyone stayed here, many settlers became discouraged and left.
  • Farmers had to face harsh climates, scarce water and lumber shortage.Farmers found different ways to overcome this, which made farming a big business.
