  • NEVER!
  • Here, the battle of Marathon was fought in 490 B.C. then ended in 480 B.C. It was the first clash between the Greeks and the invading Persians.
  • CHARGE
  • The commander for the Athenians was Miltiades when the commander for the Persians was Datus.
  • Athens and Persia fought on land near the Bay of Marathon. Athens stared at the Persians for four days before making a move. The Persians invaded Greece because they wanted revenge and glory. Also they wanted to add land to their empire.
  • NIKE, NIKE!!!
  • Nike meant victory is Ancient Greece.
  • Once Persia started boarding the boats to attack Athens head on, the Athenians saw their chance and ATTACKED!
  • The Greeks charge at a run to the Persians. Miltiades, the Athenian commander, ordered them to do this. This caught the Persians completely by surprise.
  • Once Athens won, they sent a runner named Pheidippides to spread the word that Athens won. He ran about 26.2 miles to Athens from Marathon yelling "NIKE, NIKE!" and once he reached Athens, he collapsed dead. That is where we got the idea of the American marathon.
