  • Falling Action
  • Chapters 7-10 are the rising action. After Kayla's friend moves to her new house, she goes to a bar. On the way, she is followed by someone who is later revealed as Zekeal. After they spend some time at the bar, they head to the roof of a building to talk, then head to a Decode meeting about their website, KnotU2. Kayla tries on a virtual reality camera and sees a woman from a foreign resistance group, whom she has to find. After the meeting, Kayla and Zekeal are in a secret relationship.
  • Resolution
  • 11-16 are an action-filled climax. Kayla attends another Decode meeting and adds her first article to the website, but a new law says that 17+ years must have the barcode tattoo. Later,  Kayla's mom finds her dad's FBI files and they both read about it until her mom locks the file. Nerda finally gets the tattoo despite being part of Decode. Kayla tells the rest of Decode about her father's file, but finds out Zekeal is a traitor. Her mom tells her that she has schizophrenia, and then tries to burn off her tattoo. She wakes up in a hospital and runs away. She meets a girl named Katie who helps her get out of here.
  • 17-23 is the falling action. Kayla sees herself on the news and is forced to stow away in an elderly couple's car. They drive her to the North resistance group and finds out that Mfumbe went missing on the same day as she did. Once the Group gets to Toronto, Kayla lives with the elderly couple. The husband dies and the wife tells Kayla to run, for fear if her being caught. She is starving and tired when she finds shelter, and runs into Mfumbe. They share their stories, but soon are surrounded by Globalofficers. They run for it, and as soon as they escape, Kayla gets sick and needs medicine. Mfumbe tries to steal some, but are caught. Kayla runs while he is put into jail.
  • The resolutions is in 24-28, when Kayla finds the resistance base in the mountains. She meets August, who tells her where she can find the woman she saw in the virtual reality goggles. She searches for her, but runs into Zekeal and his girlfriend, Nerda. They try to convince her to give in, and get the tattoo, but Kayla runs away and is found by the Virtual reality woman, whose name is Eutonah. She risks being found by emailing Amber, and the group is attacked by Tattoo Gen. The lasts  words she says in the book are "I'll go back. I've seen a vision and I see us winning. It's worth risking everything."
