The Paleo Period was the first Native American cultural group in North America. They lived about 10,000 years. They were nomadic which means they followed their food source and didn't have a place to call their home. This was during the Ice Age Period which had animals like mammoths,caribou,ground sloths etc.These people developed the weopon Atlatl to hunt big animals like the mammoth.They also lived in small groups of 25-50 that were temporary.These people also used horticulture.
the Archaic Period lasted from about 8000 B.C to 1000 B.C. The archaic people began to hunt small animals like deer turkey, and rabbit. They also began to live off berries and other plants. The Archaic people were hunters and gathers which means they hunted animals and gathered fruit and etc. They also developed more tools like the hook axes and weighted spears which they made from deer antlers . They also made pottery which they used to store their food and make it stay fresh longer. When they needed to move they just packed their houses and traveled to their new destination.
The Woodland Period lasted from about 1000 B.C-1000 A.D. This period built dome shaped huts to live in. They also invented the bow and arrow. They formed tribes and may have had religous celebrations.They used burial mounds to bury their dead. Their pottery was more decorative and lasted longer.
Hernando De Soto
This period started around 700 A.D. It was found along the Mississippian River. They used crop rotation. They also dressed complex and they painted their bodies.Their priest chief's lived in religious centers. They had over 1000 family villages. They used agriculture and they also met the europeans. For defenses they used guard towers and Palisades.
The Mississippian's were the first tribe to meet the Europeans.Christopher Columbus and his men were the first ones who found out about the native Americans. When they found that out they sailed back to Europe to spread the news. They were sent on a missionary to spread the religion of Catholicism. Also during that time the Columbian Exchange happened. Which included tomatoes,potatoes,corn, and a lot of other goods and ideas. Also the Europeans spread harmful things like smallpox which is a disease. That killed over 2/3 of Native Americans.
Hernando de Soto was a Spanish explorer who led the first European expedition into the southern United States.He was the first documented European to have crossed the Mississippian river. De Soto and his men explored the southeastern United States, facing ambushes and enslaving natives along the way. After Florida came Georgia and then Alabama. In Alabama, de Soto fought against Indians in Tuscaloosa.In Mississippi Soto killed many Indians the diseases they brung killed them ,and stole their food. Soto was looking for gold and riches but died before he could find any
