Storyboard Text

  • Odysseus and his crew should of been more prepared especially knowing that they were raiding and plundering other people. They should of also been prepared for the winds and encounters during their travels.
  • Odysseus's Arrival at Ismara "The Death of 72 Men."
  • "We are from Troy, Achaeans, blown off course by shifting gales on the Great South Sea." "Odysseus and his crew land on the island of Ismarus."
  • Odysseus and his men should of been more careful about the things they eat or drink around places that are unfamiliar. However, the idea of tying them to the ship to save every man Odysseus could was a much smarter idea.
  • Arrival at the Island of the Lotus Eaters "The Irresistible Lotus."
  • "Upon the tenth we came to the coastline of the Lotus Eaters, who live upon that flower." "They fell in, soon enough, with Lotus Eaters, who showed no will to do us harm."
  • A literary device used in this section was an Epic Hero. This is because of listening to his men, Odysseus decides to take a risk and go into the cave of the cyclops.
  • Instead of Odysseus taking a huge risk and finding out whether the cyclops was a friend or foe, he should of listened to his men and took a safer plan that they originally suggested.
  • The Island of Polyphemus "Home of the Cyclops."
  • "We beached there, and I told the crew to stand by and keep watch over the ship; as for myself I took my twelve best fighters and went ahead."
  • Odysseus made a very bad decision because by going into the cave, him and his men become trapped in the cave with the cyclops, which led to some of his men being eaten alive. He could of prevented this from happening if he did not decide to go into the cave.
  • The Island of Polyphemus Pt. 2 "Man Meets Cyclops."
  • "What brings you here by sea ways a fair traffic? Or are you wandering rogues, who cast your lives like dice, and ravage other folk by sea?"
  • A literary device used in this section was Verbal Irony. This is because Odysseus tricks the cyclops into thinking his name was, "Nohbdy." So when he stabs the cyclops in the eye he says, "Nohbdy, Nohbdy's tricked me, Nohbdy's ruined me!" This creates an ironic tone because of how the cyclops actually believed him.
  • Giving the cyclops the wine which led him to fall asleep was a very good idea by Odysseus. Because of this he is able to stab the cyclops in the eye, which leads him to not know what to do without his eyesight.
  • The Island of Polyphemus Pt.3 "The Attack."
  • "Clawing his face he tugged the bloody spike out of his eye, threw it away, and his wild hands went groping."
  • Odysseus was very lucky in that they were able to escape the cyclops. Even though not all of his men made it, Odysseus was very good at tricking the cyclops so they were able to escape. If he had not of done that then they might of all had been killed on the island.
  • Theme - One of the themes that are conveyed in the book is hospitality. This is because Odysseus expects this from the cyclops but he does not show this, instead he kills and eats his men. The Lotus Eaters show hospitality since they allowed Odysseus's men to eat the Lotus flowers. So throughout the book, hospitality is one of the main themes that are conveyed.
  • The Island of Polyphemus Pt. 4 "Escape From Polyphemus."
  • "So the long oars bent kicking the foam sternward, making head until we drew away, and twice as far."
