Transformation and Atonement
The abyss for the character Katniss in the novel Mockingjay would be more considered a mental abyss so much as a physical one. Most of her team members die. However, what rattles Katniss the most is the death of her little sister Primrose. It really makes her sad and angry because it was the Capitol that killed her.
The revelation for Katniss would be when she killed President Snow, the leader of the Capitol. This proved her rebellious efforts as successful because it means that the districts effectively won the civil war. This reveals a lot of character about Katniss that says she is brave to go through that whole experience.
Katniss transformed a lot since the beginning of the book. Since then, she has become more of a leader and has shown that she is brave. She gets more atoned with herself because she feels accomplished defeating the oppressive Capitol.
Katniss returns back to her home of District 12 after that whole affair. She goes back with Haymitch, who was one of her mentors, and Peeta. She has 2 children with him. She returns to relatively normal life because she now has a new family.
