James Madison was the President from 1808 - 1816. He was the President during the War of 1812.
Some of the causes for the War of 1812 were that the British had been using impressment against Americans and they had formed an alliance with the Native Americans.
During the war, the British troops went to Washington and burnt down the entire city.
At the Battle of Fort McHenry, British ships fired at Fort McHenry for 13 hours straight. On a British boat as a prisoner Francis Scott Key wrote the Star Spangled Banner about what he saw.
At the Battle of New Orleans Andrew Jackson became a war hero. This battle was the US's biggest victory during the War of 1812.
Some of the effects of the war were that the US started manufacturing a lot more products and Americans got a lot more pride and nationalism for their country.
