  • UbD? What in the world is that?
  • UbD is a 3 stage design process that helps students transfer what they have learned through performance
  • How is this different from regular teaching?
  • It focuses on 3 goals which are acquisition, meaning making, and transfer.
  • Oh, so how do teachers know that a student understands a concept?
  • The teacher evaluates the students knowledge and tailors the information to what they do/don't understand
  • UbD is a 3 stage design process with a primary goal of student understanding. There are 6 facets of understanding which include the capacity to explain, inexpert, apply, shift perspective, empathize, and self-assess.

  • In Stage 1, students transfer their learning to real-world situations. In stage 2, students must show their work and provide evidence of their understanding. In stage 3, the goals are acquisition, meaning making, and transfer. Understanding is constructed by the learner.
