  • The first piece of evidence was Susie's decapitated elbow that the neighbor's dog found.
  • "When I streaked by her, my hand leapt out to touch her, touch the last face, feel the last connection to Earth in this not-so-standard teenage girl." (Sebold 37)
  • On her way to heaven Susie makes contact with her old friend Ruth. This causes Ruth to see visions of Susie and the dead
  • Susie's bracelet is the one piece of evidence that could really help Len find the killer, but Mr Harvey has it.
  • "the smooth gold metal of the Pennsylvania keystone, the back of the ballet slipper, the tiny hole of the minuscule thimble, and the spokes of the bycycle with wheels that worked." (Sebold 53)

  • "I was in Ruth's eyes and I was looking up. I could feel the arch of her back against the pavement, and scrapes inside her where flesh had been torn away by the gravel's sharp edges." (Sebold 300)
  • Susie possesses Ruth's body after she faints and she is able to feel everything Ruth can feel and she can move the body as if it were her own.
  • "Ruth, are you okay?" (Sebold 300)
  • Ruth has been writing down all the visions she has been seeing after contacting Susie's spirit several years ago.
  • "At the tips of feathers there is air and at their base: blood. I hold up the bones; I wish like broken glass they could court light...still I try to place these pieces back together to set them firm, to make murdered girls live again." (Sebold 313)
