  • Ship-trap island, about 1917. "...Sailors have a curious dread of the place." (Connell 20)

  • Rainsford and Whitney are two hunters that are traveling on the Caribbean Sea, setting sail for Rio to hunt for jaguars. " We should have some good hunting up the amazon. Great sport, hunting." (Connell 19)
  • falling action
  • Rainsford falls off the ship while looking into the distance and sees himself swimming to the nearest island. He finds a mansion and meets the owner, General Zaroff. Rainsford soon finds out that he is on the island all sailors are terrified of and he is staying with a man who professionally hunts humans for a living. "... i have created a new sensation..." ( Connell 25)
  • resolution
  • A few days in, Rainsford gets eery while staying at general Zaroffs's mansion and wants to leave at once. To leave, he has to win the "game" where Zaroff hunts Rainsford for three days. " I wish to leave this island at once." (Connell 30)
  • Rainsford lasts the three day hunt against general Zaroff, so he has won the game. During the last night Rainsford jumps in the water and swims back to the mansion leaving Zaroff in the jungle. "You've done well, Rainsford." (Connell 34)
  • As Rainsford gets to the mansion, he hides in General Zaroffs room waiting for him to get back from the island. When Zaroff arrives home Rainsford and Zaroff have a dual to prove who the winner is. Rainsford soon kills the general and sleeps in Zaroff's bed that night. "... the other will sleep in this very excellent bed. On guard, Rainsford..." (Connell 36)
