Jonas, his partial younger brother, Gabe, and the Giver are outside of the Annex room, on the other side of town, several blocks away from the main building in their small populated town.
Jonas realizes the real meaning of release, and what the town's ways of "releasing" people Elsewhere. This new meaning of release makes Jonas very conflicted.
When Jonas becomes the new Receiver he receives memories that change the way that he thinks about himself and his community forever.
Jonas realizes that when his father "releases newchildren, he actually kills them, which makes Jonas go to a point of no return. His frustration with the community and his desire to change it have been growing steadily, and at this point Jonas can't accept the ignorance of human life in his society.
The speaker in the Annex room and shows the scene of the newchild being released. (Represented in cell 2)
In order to put his plan into motion, Jonas flees the community on bicycle with his "brother," Gabe. avoiding search planes and fighting hunger and pain to try to bring feelings and color to his community and bring himself to the world he has dreamed of knowing.
Jonas find a house with a tree inside, and lights, and finds family inside loving on one another. Memories, warmth, color,and feelings come back to him. This was a memory he had experienced from the Giver, and he felt that he had found his wanted place.
