My name is Gail Mcgovern and I am the CEO of the Red Cross Organisation. Prior to joining the red cross, I was a faculty member at the Harvard Business School. In my 13 years at the Red Cross, I have undergone numerous initiatives and have achieved many goals for the Red Cross, including improving their overall financial stability and expanding the reach of lifesaving red cross services.
An Australian NGO is wanting me to design and produce a graphic design for a T-shirt intended for a team that will run in the next City to Surf carnival. This is one of Australia’s biggest fun runs and the graphic t shirt design must express and advertise a particular NGO. Criteria for success which must be adhered to in my T-shirt design are: •The graphic can be black or white or made up of a range of colours •The graphic must contain a minimum of 5 different element •The graphic must be eye catching, innovative and unique •Your final design should graphically advertise the role of the NGO
The NGO I have chosen is my very own, the Red Cross Organisation. The Red Cross idea was born in 1859, when Henry Dunant, a young Swiss man, came upon the scene of a bloody battle in Solferino, Italy, between the armies of imperial Austria and the Franco-Sardinian alliance. Some 40,000 men lay dead or dying on the battlefield and the wounded were lacking medical attention.Durant was shocked and overwhelmed at the scale of suffering and initiated the founding of the red cross. The red cross was then started when five Geneva men, including Dunant, set up the International Committee for Relief to the Wounded, later to become the International Committee of the Red Cross. Today the red cross provides support an assistance in the form of medical aid, blood donations, health and safety services, aid through supplies during disasters and supporting America's military families.
The NGO issue of which I have covered in my T-shirt design is that of Assistance to countries in time of hardship specifically that in regard to medical aid. Countries may require assistance during times off turmoil and the red cross is essential in the recovery process for these countries after certain political and natural events which have had impact on local people. In these events, the Red Cross provides shelter, food, health and mental health services to help families get back on their feet. While the Red Cross is not a governmental organisation, The Red Cross is an essential part of the process of ensuring that these affected people can get back on their feet.
My Graphic design promoted the NGO using the design elements in a wide variety of ways. In my design I used a found image of Red Cross assistants providing aid to refugees. I then used this image as my font in my design by blending it in with the words. I also added a image of a stethoscope and used lines to add to the design of the stethoscope and make it more attractive and enticing to viewers. I photoshopped an array of lines on the stethoscope to represent the cuts and injuries sustained by those who required assistance and used the stencil of the stethoscope to represent the RedCross’s efforts in healing those who had been injured I used a stencil of a running man in my t-shirt design, almost as if to show that the Red Cross were striving and rushing to help those in need and were willing to put in considerable effort and hardship to do so. I found that my found image of a stethoscope showed that the red cross provided medical support to those whom required their assistance.
I found that my final T-shirt design considered and addressed the brief considerably well. In accordance with the design brief, my t shirt was eye-catching, creative, incorporated 5 design elements, advertised the role of the NGO specific to medical aid, was identifiable as advertising the red cross and was aesthetically appealing. I ensured that my T-shirt was identifiable as representing the red cross through the quote which was synonymous with the red cross and the red cross icon photoshopped into the stethoscope.
