"Can you see anything?"
"Yes, wonderful things"
In November 1922, Howard Carter and his financial backer Lord Carnavon were digging in the Valley of the Kings in Egypt trying to find the lost tomb of the boy King, Tutankhamun.
One day, they discovered a staircase and at the bottom of the staircase there was an unopened door. Howard Carter opened the door and checked for deadly gases.
Upon opening the first door, Howard Carter and Lord Carnavon walked down a tunnel and found a second door, Howard Carter made a hole in the door to check for deadly gasses and when he knew it was safe, he looked through the hole.
Carter and Carnavon were not allowed to look in the tomb until they had an Egyptian inspector to go in with them. Carter couldn't wait, so he went back later that night and went into the tomb and found lots and lots of treasure.
As Howard Carter looked around the room, he discovered that he couldn't see the sarcophagus of Tutankhamun. He noticed on one of the walls there were two statues of Tutankhamun who looked like guards. Carter thought that they must be guarding a secret door...and they were!
Howard Carter made a small hole in the door, crawled through and had a look in the chamber. He came back the next day with the inspector and pretended that he had never been inside the tomb. Once they removed the door fully, they found a lot more treasure and the sarcophagus of the boy King Tutankhamun.
