  • On another tape, Hannah explains the reason why Marcus Cooley has an impact on her life when they decided to go on a date to Rosie’s diner. When Marcus arrives he tries to take advantage of her by assaulting her in the booth leaving her feeling used and vulnerable.
  • I feel so stupid...
  • "'Stop it'" (Asher 143).
  • You're a tease!
  • As Clay listens to more and more tapes, he begins to understand why she feels so insecure. When he gets to his tape, he has a hard time listening to the role played in Hannah’s life.
  • "'I would've been happier never hearing this'" (Asher 200).
  • "'No. It would drive you crazy not knowing what happened to her'" (Asher 201).
  • Hannah and Clay finally connect with each other at a party when they have their first kiss. That’s when everyone from her list, and what everyone has thought about her comes rushing into her thoughts. As much as Clay wanted help Hannah, she pushed him away and would not let him get close.
  • "'Stop'" (Asher 216).
  • "I wanted to help you" (Asher 217). But I was scared.
  • Hannah’s last deciding factor was when she went to Courtney's house after her party was over. She met Bryce Walker in the hot tub and used him to finally let her reputation catch up to her by letting him assault her.
  • "'Best ass in the freshman class'" (Asher 264).
  • "'Just relax... Everything will be okay'" (Asher 265).
  • Before completely giving up, she gives life one more chance by going to her school guidance counselor to explain what is going on in her life. Hannah tells Mr. Porter what happened at Courtney’s house. He attempts to help her by giving her options of confronting him or moving on. She leaves the office and in this moment her mind is made up.
  • He lets her go and no one is stepping forward to stop her.
  • "'Hannah, what are you talking about?'" (Asher 279).
  • "'If nothing's going to change, then I'd better get on with it, right?'" (Asher 279).
  • "'I'm talking about my life'" (Asher 279).
  • In the end, Clay learns from his mistakes with Hannah, and is determined not to repeat them by helping a girl named Skye who is going through similar experiences as her.
