The north made money from transporting goods to England and because of the recent urbanisation there was many people to make those goods.
Labor in the North was done mostly by immigrants who moved to the United States.Laborers work the new machines. Blacks were not accepted to work in a factory even though the North had no slavery.
Free African American life in the North was very harsh, blacks were discriminated against and it was very hard to find work because of this discrimination.
The south made money from planting cash crops such as cotton. Plantation owners had slaves work on the plantation to grow things and they eventually sold anything they grew to the north and then to England.
Labor in the south was very hard slaves were forced to work on plantations and very few slaves were free. If a slave ever disobeyed his/her master or broke the slave codes, he would be punished. Punishments included whipping and for large "crimes" killing and branding.
Free slaves in the south did not have any rights that a white man did. They were constantly denied jobs and could not make a living because of this. Even if a slave was free they could still be captured by slave catchers and sold to another master.
