Marius, finding himself overshadowed by his colleagues and compromised by their excesses, decided to seek new tribunes to be eligible to work beside him.
Saturninus and Glaucia saw that their only hope of safety lay in their retention for office. Thus, Saturninus was elected tribune for the third time for a year.
Gaius Memmius, who seemed to have a better chance of success also ran as a tribune, and soon many adored him which lessened the chance of Saturninus being reelected.
As Saturninus and Glaucia soon realized they may lose to Gaius in the reelection, they hire agents to beat Gaius to death.
This produced a complete revulsion of public feeling. The Senate met on the following day, declared Saturninus and Glaucia public enemies, and called upon Marius to defend the state.
Saturninus, defeated in a pitched battle in the Roman Forum retreated and took refuge with his followers in the Capitol, where the water supply having been cut off, forced them to capitulate and surrender.
