Storyboard Text

  • MOM
  • Disclaimer: My mom is Korean who grew up in Sao Paolo, Brazil, then immigrated to Los Angeles, where she continued to learn English and Spanish. So her accent is a mix of four languages. Her dialogue will be written phonetically for added effect to the situation. Spelling is intentional.
  • The conversation goes as follows. Mom's in "green" and I'm responding in "blue."
  • Pah-tree-sha, are you listening? Hello? Pah-tree-sha?
  • Yeah, Mom. What'chu need?
  • Pah-tree-sha, I find. Homeless. So cute!! I go Mac-Donald and find homeless. I bring home. I wash him. He is clean. I take off flea. And how he is in room, watching TV!
  • Yes, mom. I'm listening. What's up? I'm at work.
  • Here I am, happily working away in my office on a dreary November 2009 morning. At about 10:30-ish, I got a call from my mom.
  • Dog, dog. Not human. Dog. He yellow. Ugly teeth. Eyes so cute! I show you picture. Okay. Hang up. I send picture. Hang up. Let me send picture. Okay. Hang up. Bye.
  • MOM! Are you talking about a homeless PERSON or a homeless DOG??
  • Imagine my mom speaking in an excited but hushed voice....
  • And this is what I imagined in my head. Some no-longer-homeless man sitting in my mom's living room, watching TV. He's all cleaned and flea-less because my mom bathed him. Imagine my confusion.
  • Mom brushed off my question like it was a minute detail she forgot to include. While she described our new dog, I was still adjusting my thoughts. Disclaimer: To this day, mom has to hang up the phone to send photos rather than doing it while on the phone.
  • And that's how I met Roy, the love of my life. When he looks at me with his beady eyes and underbite smile, I can't help but be happy and thankful mom decided to one day pick up a homeless "boy" at McDonald's.
