Storyboard Text

  • Hey Brian! What is on that chemistry quiz tomorrow, something about subatoms?
  • I think you mean subatomic, which are protons and neutrons, they are in the atom's nucleus.  Also don't forget atoms, they are the smallest units of matter that still have properties of their element.
  • Oh an element.  An element is something like oxygen.  An element is a substance that chemically as simple as possible.
  • What is that thing the teacher is always talking about.  Element?
  • Another thing she talks about is groups.  I guess she means a group project?
  • No, she means a group or a family on the Periodic table.  They are the vertical columns of the different elements.
  • Also she talks about periods a lot.  I guess in my writings I forget to put them.
  • No, she means the horizontal rows in the Periodic Table. They also have different names like alkaline earth metals and noble gases.
  • Also do you ever notice when she talks about blocks.  Like S and P and something about bunkbeds?
  • No those are the s,p,d and f blocks.  You can use them to find elements on the table and each one has its own shape.
  • Do you understand why the valence electrons have a addition and subtraction next to them?
  • Those tell you the charge on the electron and if they want to give away or gain electrons.  They are in the outermost shell of the electron.
