  • Ionization energy is the energy that is required to remove 1 electron from a neutral atom. As in a group, the ionization energy decreases down. In a period, it increases across the period.
  • Electron
  • Neutral Atom
  • The group is like stairs. When a person is standing up on the higher stair where is farther away from the floor, he may need more energy for himself to go down to the floor.
  • When the another person is standing on the lower stair, just like the group goes down, he always requires less energy to get to the floor. So the ionization energy decreases down as in a group.

  • When the energy level is the same (standing on the same step), the amounts of electrons (magnets) increase across the period.
  • The attraction between the nucleus and the electrons is similar to the attraction of magnets.
  • As they increase, the attraction among the electrons and the nucleus is more powerful. Like magnets, when there are more magnets, they attract each other harder.
  • As the electrons attract to the nucleus harder, it also becomes harder to pull an electron from the atom. If the attraction between 2 magnets is super powerful, it might not be easy to separate them.

  • Like tug of war, it's hard for a player to win if there is not only 1 person on the other side connecting to each other and pulling.
