They reached the South Pole on December 14, 1911. They named the area "Poleheim" meaning Home on the Pole. He was the first explorer to reach the South Pole

Years later, explorers started to use other ways of traveling such as airplanes and dirigibles. Roald was the first explorer to fly over the North Pole in a dirigible in 1926.
In 1928, Roald Amundsen was retired, but he went to rescue a friend who wanted to follow in his footsteps as an explorer. Sadly, Roald's plane crashed into the Arctic Ocean and he was killed.
