Paul felt most comfortable and like he belonged in the thearter, not the acting or actually making the magic, but being there and watching it all unfold
At school, home, and church, he felt different, and that they were not worthy of him. He felt restricted form what he wants, and wishes to have lavish stories.
With the lifestyle he imagined for himself, he moved to New York, and created a new Paul, one with stolen money, and a fake lifestyle, he felt free and finally himself.
In the end, Paul found out that he was going to be dragged back to the oppressive place where he once lived, where he had to work for money, and could not fit in by just a fashion change. Therefore he threw himself in front of a train killing himself.
