Charlie Shoots Pete Van Horn thinking he was the monster.
The people of Maple St. had many assumptions about who they think is the monster, but the worst of all was when Mrs. Brand (Steve wife) assumed that her husband was a monster and told everyone behind his back . And when she finally got called out she tried to act like it was no big deal and take it back.

They let their emotions and thoughts get to them, and they hurt people out of their actions. When the group was arguing about who the monster was an unknown figure came upon him. So Charlie shot the figure thinking it was the monster. When they came upon it It was Pete Van Horn. One of their own.
The Street was a war zone. They let their assumptions get to their heads. They didn't know what to do. So in the end, their last result was to turning on each other. And they ended up killing hurting and harming each other, without ever finding out who the real monster is....
