Storyboard Text

  • Today I'm going to the pool with my friends, Kennah, Brenda and Matt. I hope I'll learn something new!
  • Hello! I'm Phyllis and I love physics! Physics is in everyday life and I love to learn all about it.
  • Oh no! Kennah pushed Brenda into the water! But look at those waves she made!
  • Hey! No pushing people into the pool!
  • Waves are part of physics. The top of the wave is called the crest while the bottom is called the trough. That is all I know about them, but I want to know more.
  • Trough
  • Crest
  • Did you say you wanted to know more about waves?
  • Well, I can help because I just learned about waves in my high school physics class.
  • Yeah, I did Landon!
  • In physics, a wave is a disturbance that travels through space and matter transferring energy from one place to another. Waves transfer energy not matter.
  • I never knew that! Are there different types of waves?
  • There are many types of waves, but all waves can be categorized as either mechanical or electromagnetic.
  • Mechanical waves need a medium to transfer energy. A medium is a material that a disturbance travels through. In a mechanical wave, molecules collide with each other as they move through the medium.
